Human activity along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River - such as building hydropowerstations and excessive fishing - has pushed its aquatic ecosystem to the verge of collapse, a report released on Thursday warns.

周四發布的一份報告指出，由于在長江上游大量建設水電站和過度捕魚等人類活動，長江水生態系統已瀕臨崩潰。

生態系統（ecosystem）指由生物群落與無機環境構成的統一整體，具體有森林生態系統（forest ecosystem）、海洋生態系統（marine ecosystem）以及城市生態系統（urban ecosystem）等很多門類，這里的長江水生態系統就是aquatic ecosystem。“瀕臨崩潰”這里用on the verge of collapse來表示，collapse有“倒塌、崩潰、瓦解”的意思，可用來表示建筑、體系、精神的崩塌，如building collapse（建筑物倒塌）、mental collapse（精神崩潰）等。

本次聯合科考實地調查了從自然河段到梯級水電（step hydropower/cascade hydropower）、從自然因素到人類活動（human activity）對長江上游（the upper reaches of the Yangtze River ）的綜合影響。報告指出，造成長江生態系統嚴重破壞的主要原因為過度水電開發（over-exploitation of hydropower）和相關法規執法不嚴（lax law enforcement），以及過度捕魚（overfishing）。很多水電工程沒有通過環境影響評估（environmental impact assessment）就開工建設，而每年三個月的休漁期（moratorium）對幫助魚類繁殖作用不大，專家建議實行全面禁漁（total fishing ban），但前提是制定好相關的補償機制。
